Collins Bay Yacht Club was established back in 1980 by Bill and Mary Steenbakkers and a number of boaters in the marina. That same year, the first Pigeon Island Race was held with 37 boats participating.  In 1981 the club established a logo, colours and the Club burgees. The first newsletter was  published, the marina donated the first CBYC clubhouse “Northern Lights”,  and the club celebrated its first Awards Banquet and Dance that year.  The Reciprocal program and the first Family Day and Sailpast were added in 1983. In 1984 the club held a Great Circle Raft in Prinyers Cove with 24 boats. CBYC joined the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) in 1985.

In 1989 the Junior Sail Training Program was started.  The second clubhouse the S.S. Maria was launched and christened in 1992. Over these years club members have enjoyed many fun Cruises and Races.  New permanent race marks were established at the Brother Islands in 1996. The website was started in 2001 and CBYC hosted EYC in both 2004 and 2012.

CBYC now boasts over 135 members and held over 45 races and five major club cruises last year. The club has a full Junior Sailing School with 112 students last year, a high level of trained instructors, a large percentage of new dinghies and a new Sailing School Trailer donated by the Marina. Throughout the season the club also had a number of Social events including BBQ’s, Coffee Houses, Banquets, Breakfasts, Wine and Cheese, Sail Past and the Annual General Meeting.

CBYC enjoys a very positive relationship with the Collins Bay Marina which has been very generous in support of the club.
