What to Wear
Points to remember:
- It’s nearly never as warm on the water as you’d imagine
- Becoming cold and wet will make you unhappy and disinclined to be enthused about sailing in general
- Bare skin gets cold on cold days, and sun burnt on hot days
A good rule of thumb is to wear one extra layer of clothing. Try this combination:
- Topside – put a windbreaker over a tee-shirt
- Down below – wind pants or polar fleece pants over a pair of shorts
Remember: Polar fleece fabric dries out quickly – on a windy day you will get wet. If you get too warm, you can always remove an item or two. Try not to wear jeans or cotton shirts. Both get awfully cold when they’re wet, and tend to stay cold for a good long time.
